Update 2: August 17, 2011 The TechExxpert guide has been updated to fully allow Xcode 4.1 to work. Sorry that the past fixes did not work. Thanks for the comments! Please let me know if this guide works/doesn't work.

Update: This guide has been modified to the latest updates as of August 2, 2011 including the latest Xcode 4.1 and OS X Lion 10.7.

Apple has been adamantly refusing to create an iPhone SDK support for Windows-based machines. Luckily, there is a work around to be able to fully run the iOS SDK and Xcode support for most all PC's.

The following steps involve installing a virtual machine on your PC, updating the virtual machine to 10.7 , then running the machine and downloading and installing the iOS SDK and Xcode on to the virtual machine.

There are other ways to install OS X on your machine but they involve creating a new partition and installing the Operating System directly to your hard drive. Those ways are much harder and have more confusing steps that could potentially damage your computer. This method is easier and safer to use.

The process will take 2-3 hours, but most of the time is consumed by large downloads. There's no software to buy or developer fees to pay.

Instructions

1. Follow the steps here to download and install a virtualized version of OS X Lion on your PC.

2. If you don't have a free Apple Dev Account, create one here. You'll need this to be able to download Xcode 4.1 for free. In OS X, open the App Store and download Xcode. You can view progress of the download under the Purchases tab.

3. Once the progress bar is finished, it will say it is installed but it really isn't. Open the Applications folder from Finder. Double-click on the Install Xcode icon.

4. Follow the on-screen directions then wait for the installation to finish.

6. Once it's done, it should open by itself. If it doesn't, you will NOT find the iPhone SDK in your dock. You will need to open your hard drive. Then Click on Developer, then on Applications.

7. You will now see an icon for Xcode, click it and you can start coding applications.

If the icons don't show up, you may not have enough virtual hard drive space to fit the program. Make sure you have at least 10 GB of free memory in the virtual machine. Restarting your machine may be another way to make the icon appear.

Now you can start coding an app for your personal use. The language you will be coding in is Objective-C. If you don't have any experience with Objective-C, TheNewBoston provides free tutorials on Xcode and Xcode iPhone development. I recommend following the Objective-C tutorials
first.

You will be able to test your app on the iPhone simulator in Xcode but you will not be able to add the app to your own device. To add an app that you've created to your device, see the two options below.

Option 1: If you want to submit your app to the App Store, you will need to pay Apple $100 for an official Developers Certificate. This will allow you to sell your app to a very large audience but Apple does place large restrictions on its approval of submissions.

Option 2: If you don't want to pay the $100, you can develop your application for Cydia (similar to the App Store). This option will also allow you to place your app on to your iPhone, not just only in the Xcode simulator.

Cydia is the unofficial App Store for users who have jailbroken and want to sell/share their apps. There are almost no restrictions as to what kind of apps that can be added to Cydia.

To develop for Cydia, you will need to have your device jailbroken (How do I jailbreak?) and before you start developing your app, you will need to follow these steps to create an alternate Certificate.

i installed the mac os update and system just freezed and i restarted the VM without installing Kernel update. now it doesn't boot up? any solution?

Deadfire55 said... @ January 23, 2011 at 8:19 AM

@xcode. Try to remove the darwin.iso from the Settings window, start the machine, power off the machine, put the darwin.iso back and now try to power on the machine.

If that doesn't work, what exactly do you mean by it doesn't boot up? Does it get to a screen and then freeze or something else?

Thank you for the tutorial :)!

Thanks that worked perfect, but one question is it also possible to boot or restart the machine over the apple symbol or only over the VMware bar, for me it isn´t working over the apple button??

"I get the dreaded Mac OS X Server 10.6 (experimental).vmx" is not a valid virtual machine configuration file"

make sure you click on Mac OS X Server 10.6 (experimental).vmx and not _Mac OS X Server 10.6 (experimental).vmx

After a period of inactivity inside the virtual machine, I can't get the mouse to appear inside it (the whole OS freezes). Once i got it back somehow, does anybody know a solution to this bug. It happens quite often and restarting the OS every time it happens is not an option.

""@xcode. Try to remove the darwin.iso from the Settings window, start the machine, power off the machine, put the darwin.iso back and now try to power on the machine.""

Ok it works now. I forgot to install the kernel. Any idea how to update to 10.6.6? I cannot install the new xcode

Anonymous said... @ April 1, 2011 at 2:27 PM

sounds as if it were true

Anonymous said... @ April 3, 2011 at 7:26 PM

The latest version doesn't work, it needs at least 10.6.6.

Here is the Mac OS X v10.6.7 Update Combo:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361

Here is the Legacy Kernel (10.7.0) that goes with it:

Hope this helps.

Hi. I virtualize OS X and it goes perfectly, but after I install the two updates it gives me a lot of problems. The first time it froze after the update, so I restarted it by VMware, but at the restart it gave me a 'panic error cpu...'. I deleted the virtual machine and created a new one. This time after installing the updates it didn't froze, but after I restarted it VMware says 'Operating System not found'.
Please help me since I don't want to virtualize it again for the third time and I really need Xcode.

Any idea how to update to 10.6.6? Everything else works but now can't find the download for Xcode 3.2.5. And the new version 3.2.6 requires 10.6.6

Anonymous said... @ April 8, 2011 at 6:14 AM

To use Xcode 3.2.6 just search for the Mac OS X v10.6.6 Update Combo. It worked fine for me.

The recent version is Xcode 4.0.1 and iOS SDK 4.3 which I downloaded a week ago. Just thought of sharing the info.

Vivek said... @ April 11, 2011 at 11:22 PM

I have installed as per the guide & everything went smoothly. But after installing Xcode 3.2.6 & i_OS SDK 4.3 does not work. Would like to know any workarounds. Thanks in advance.

Anonymous said... @ April 14, 2011 at 4:47 PM

If you carefully watch the video, you can see that you should not restart after update, install the kernel update and then restart your OS, VMPlayer shutdown problem is resolved with that way.

Hi Guys I'm having the same issue with updaing to 10.6.7 using the instructions. Installed the update, installed the 10.7.0.1 kernel update, reboots to get panic error. I've taken a screenshot if that helps.

Thanks in advance.

Everything works great except that SL guest doesn`t recognize my iDevices (iPhone/iPad) although i disconnected it from host and connect to SL guest.
The iphone icon on the bottom of the screen indicate that VM has connected correctly to the iphone but the iphone is not detected by iTunes or the OSX?

i have tried to install the sdk four times and each time the files don't appear in the directory at all. I have plenty of space left over after the install (about 3 times more than i need t install). Everything else works up to this pint and i have tried repeating the same steps over and over and over but can't get this working. the installer literally does nothing at all eveyr single time i have ever run it. And I have run it many times. Please get back to me with something usefull. This is completely bunk.

For People who has the boot screen stuck after the upgrade, change in the vmx file

smc.present = "true" to "False"

Anonymous said... @ July 1, 2011 at 10:22 AM

THis does not work. Xcode does not install. The installer runs and says that it succeeeded but nothing appears in the described directory \Developer\Applications. I have tried just about everything I can including including repeating any and all o the steps in various combinations starting from the very beginning. Everything works up until xcode install. Nothing is installed even though I wait for an hour while the scrollbar moves. It isn't being placed somehwere else on disk either since after the installation states that it has finished successfully the disk has the same amount of space. Please help

I have done the Terminal uninstall, and reinstalled on the new Admin account, but it still crashes with an error that looks like the original expected error.

By the way, I was unable to do the uninstall on the terminal at first, because it prompted for a user password. The default Lion User account doesn't actually have a password on it, so I was unable to proceed until I created a password for the Lion User. Then the terminal uninstall procedure went fine. A shame the reinstall on the new account didn't work.

While everyone is waiting, I got it working. I have had the problems you have had.

You want to get hold of version 10.6.6 exactly (Leopard) as an ISO.

You then want to get hold of the XCode4.dmg from somewhere ;)

See:

http://blog.merrycode.com/how-to-install-mac-os-x-10-6-6-includes-app-store-in-vmware-on-windows-7/

and if it doesn't load correctly put the parameters shown on this page when booting Darwin:

I download Xcode with this link : http://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action . It never works for me with the AppStore.
XCode works very well for me (vmware workstation / virtual box 4.1.4 ; windows 7 ; sony vaio vpcsb2m9e).
I put 2048Mo for RAM in vmware, and the installation of Xcode (with ios sdk, and all stuff) takes me about 10Go.

NZiebart said... @ October 29, 2011 at 5:38 PM

I successfully installed OS X and am waiting for Xcode to download (I had to use the link developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action because the app store wouldn't work).
However, the performance is somewhat lacking.. opening the launchpad and resizing windows is pretty slow, and there is some keyboard and mouse lag occasionally. Any tips for improving performance? In VMware, I allocated as many cores and as much memory as the OS would support. I'm also running it from a SSD.

Hi,

I'm getting a "Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device" error. Any idea what would cause this? I have the latest version of VMWare Workstation that I just installed into Windows 7.

Thanks,

The virtual OS X Lion works perfectly for me but I am having issues installing xcode. When using the install assistant, it gets all the way to the installation step before becoming stuck on "Waiting for other installations to complete..." forever. Any known fixes?

Thanks!

Hey there, everything went well, twice... But after I install Xcode it asks me to update Itunes as well, because my phone wont work with a lower version of Itunes. When thats done and the virtual computer restarts I cant get into iOs again. It just loads till it shows a stopsign. It seems that this breaks the install. Anything I can do or should I just NOT update iTunes...?

It's not really xcode on windows. its on mac. Only that mac is virtualized.

What would be cool is that actually XCode would run on windows somehow :)

Love how these guides endorse piracy - just say'n (first step contains a link to a torrent and a comment on searching for pirated software - flame on?) i'm a M$ wdow$ user cause Apple Hardware is Over priced - and UI is annoying as hell (not bad - just annoying). Thanks for the guides though <3

Hi. Does anybody know whether this enables (after installing virtual Mac & Xcode, of course) to run & debug apps on the actual device (i.e. iPad) connected with PC via USB cable ?

Anonymous said... @ June 20, 2012 at 12:27 AM

It worked for me, but Xcode 4.3 has some bugs. The right click menu to add icons to your app does not have 'select file' therefore you cant add icons to your apps, very frustrating

Cydia is very dangous when your just want to allow people to get your app. I used to use for my developing and then I got hacked from it. If you want to give your apps out in a safe mannner I found a cydia alternative called openappmkt
you can get it here. http://www.openappmkt.com/

" You will not be able to add the app to your own device" what does this mean? Am I able to add the app that’s I build by myself for personal use. As an example I make the calculator apps and I just want to use it by myself and install it on my iPhone. It that possible?
